Conflict: Want Meets Wall

The picture: Pushing a door that opens is not a story. Pushing a door that someone is holding shut from the other side is. Conflict is a want hitting a wall.

Say you write: "Maya wanted to go to the party. She went to the party. It was fun." Nothing is wrong with the sentences. But nobody cares, because nothing stood in her way. Now say her mom grounded her, the party is across town, and her best friend will be there with the person Maya is secretly avoiding. Suddenly we are leaning in.

Conflict is the engine of your story. No engine, no trip. This chapter shows you how to build one.

The two ingredients

Every conflict needs two things:

A want. Something your hero is trying to get or keep. (A want is the goal the character can name out loud, like "win the race" or "find my dog.")
A wall. Something that blocks that want.

If either one is missing, the scene goes flat. A want with no wall is a shopping trip. A wall with no want is just scenery.

Three kinds of walls

Person vs. person: another character wants something that clashes with your hero's want.
Person vs. world: nature, rules, society, a monster, a deadline.
Person vs. self: fear, pride, doubt, a secret.

The strongest scenes mix two or three. A kid who must give a speech (world) in front of a rival (person) while shaking with stage fright (self) has a scene with real heat.

The rules

Both sides must have good reasons. A villain who is just "evil" is flat. A villain who thinks they are right is scary.
Conflict is not just fighting. Two friends who both want to help, but in opposite ways, is excellent conflict.
Escalate. Start with a small disagreement and grow it. (To escalate means to make the problem bigger or more dangerous step by step.)
Use time pressure. A clock turns trouble into urgency.
Make it personal. The wall should hit the hero's specific weak spot.
Do not solve it too easily. If the problem disappears in one line, it was not a real problem.
Let the hero pay. Winning should cost something: time, a friend, a belief, a bruise.

Quick check for any scene: Who wants what? Who or what is in the way? What happens if they lose?

Worked example 1: the wall that is too soft

Weak version

Eli needed to find his lost dog, Biscuit. He looked in the yard and found him right away. "Good boy!" said Eli. They went inside.

Why it fails: There is a want (find the dog) but the wall is made of tissue paper. The problem lasts two sentences. No tension, no choices, no feelings.

Stronger version

Eli had until dark to find Biscuit. After that, his dad had said, the dog goes to the shelter, because one more escape from the yard meant one more complaint from the neighbors. Eli checked the yard. Gate open. Muddy prints heading toward Mr. Okafor's house, the one place Eli swore he would never go.

What changed: - A clock (dark) adds urgency. - A stake (the shelter) says what is lost. - A personal wall (Mr. Okafor, whom Eli fears) forces him to face something inside himself.

Same goal. Much better story.

Worked example 2: the cardboard villain

Weak version

Coach Dale hated Priya because he was mean. He yelled at her and kept her off the team.

Why it fails: "Because he was mean" is not a reason. The reader cannot argue with him, fear him, or understand him. He is a prop.

Stronger version

Coach Dale had lost the state final by one point, twelve years ago, because a fast, flashy player ignored the plan. Now he saw that same grin on Priya every time she dribbled past three defenders. He was not trying to crush her. He was trying to stop the worst day of his life from happening again.

What changed: The coach now has a motive (a reason to act). He thinks he is protecting the team. Priya wants to play her way; he wants to prevent disaster. Both are "right." That is why the clash hurts.

Worked example 3: two friends, one problem

Weak version

Jordan and Sam argued. Jordan said he was wrong. Sam said no, you are wrong. They stopped talking.

Why it fails: We do not know what they want. "Arguing" is not a conflict. It is noise.

Stronger version

Jordan wanted to tell their teacher about the cheating ring. Sam wanted to protect his cousin, who was part of it. Both were trying to do the right thing. Both were sure the other one was making a mistake.

What changed: Now each character has a want that is also a value. The wall between them is not hatred. It is loyalty on both sides. Readers will argue about who is right, which means they care.

Escalation: a staircase, not a ramp

A good story does not stay at one level of trouble. Think of stairs:

1	Hero loses their phone
2	Phone turns up in the rival's bag
3	Rival says she found it in the trash
4	The phone has a message the hero did not want anyone to see
5	The whole school is now reading it

Each step is worse than the last, and each forces a new choice. If your middle feels boring, check whether you are on a flat floor instead of a staircase.

Common mistakes

The all-evil villain. Give them a reason and a point of view.
Fake conflict. A misunderstanding that one honest sentence would clear up. Readers will yell at the page. (If you use a misunderstanding, make sure there is a real reason nobody speaks up.)
Conflict with no stakes. If losing costs nothing, winning means nothing.
Too many walls at once. Five problems in one scene blur together. Pick one main wall per scene.
The easy rescue. A grown-up, a magic item, or luck solves it. Let your hero do the work.
Stopping at "arguing." Characters should want something specific from each other, not just be mad.
No change. At the end of a conflict scene, something should be different: a plan, a relationship, a piece of knowledge.

Worked example 4: the inner wall

Weak version

Kai was scared of the diving board. He was scared, so he didn't dive. Then he wasn't scared, and he dove.

Why it fails: The fear is announced, then vanishes. Nothing happens in between, so we never feel the struggle.

Stronger version

Kai climbed the ladder because everyone was watching. At the top, the board looked a mile long. His toes curled over the edge. Behind him, the line grew restless. Someone whispered "Is he going?" He could climb back down, and everyone would know. Or he could jump, and his stomach would drop out of his body. He counted to three. He counted to three again.

What changed: The fear is shown through the body, an audience adds pressure, and Kai faces two bad choices. Inner conflict works best when there is a clock and a crowd.

A simple scene recipe

When a scene feels limp, run these four steps:

Name the want of the person whose point of view we are in.
Name the block. Who or what says no?
Add a try and a fail. The hero acts, and it goes wrong or only half works.
End with a change. New info, new problem, or new plan.

If you can't do step 4, cut or combine the scene. Try this on three scenes from a story you love, and you will start to see the pattern everywhere.

Percy Jackson check

Percy's problems come from all three sides: gods and monsters (outside), a ticking clock (world), and his own temper and doubt about who he is (inside). Early on, he is blamed for something huge he did not do, and the people who should trust him do not. That is person vs. world and person vs. person at the same time.

The most memorable conflicts are with people who have reasons of their own. Rivals at camp, for example, are not cartoon bullies from the start; they have pride and pressure and history. Watch how his quest also has a deadline, which squeezes every choice.

Our own imitation line (not from the book): "The monster blocked the door, and the bus left in ten minutes." Want (catch the bus), wall (monster), clock (ten minutes). Three parts in one sentence.

Mini-quiz

1. What two ingredients does every conflict need? A want and a wall.

2. Your villain "is just bad." What do you fix first? Give the villain a reason and a goal that makes sense to them.

3. Your hero's problem is solved in one line by a helpful adult. What went wrong? The wall was too weak, and the hero did not earn the win. Make the problem harder or have the hero solve it.

Try it (20 min)

Pick a scene. Write what each character wants in one sentence. Change one want so it clashes harder. Then add a clock: by when must they get it?

Level up

Take one scene and write it three times, each with a different wall:

Another person blocks the want.
The world blocks it (weather, rule, deadline).
The hero's own fear blocks it.

Which version made you want to keep writing? Which one feels most true to your hero? Often the winning draft mixes two. Combine them and see.
